What's 3GP Format

3GP or 3GP file format is a multimedia container format specially developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which’s aimed at establishing a global network to allow users access to the mobile computing anywhere in the world. 3GP is a type of 3G stream video format which’s defined to be used on most portable devices such as smart phones, MP4 players, etc. Generally speaking, 3GP file is of small size with strong flexibility, both of which make it extremely suitable for using on the portable gadgets. However, it has got poor compatibility with PC with few applications capable of supporting it. Moreover, the playback quality of this format is much worse than that of AVI format. The 3GP file format keep video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC, HE-AAC v1 or Enhanced aacPlus (HE-AAC v2). There are two different standards available:

3GPP especially for GSM mobile phones, extension name of .3gp AND 3GPP2 for CDMA mobile phones with extension name of .3g2, both of which use video MPEG-4/H.263 and audio AAC/ AMR standards.

Basically, 3GP files can be opened or played by Mac Linux, Windows MPlayer and VLC media player. Besides, Media Player Classic, K-Multimedia Player, Totem, RealPlayer, QuickTime, and GOM Player also offer support to this format. 3GP files can be encoded or decoded by the open source software Ffmpeg. On the other hand, videos in 3GP format can be supported by lots of 3G capable mobile devices (with limitation to the memory, recording, resolution varies).
