What is XAVC/XAVC-S Format

In October 30, 2012, Sony developed a new recording file format called XAVC. It was specially designed to accelerate 4K development in both professional and consumer markets. It was initially used by Sony CineAlta 4K Camcorders PMW-F55 and PMW-F5. Using the highest level 5.2 of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, XAVC can support superb 4K resolution (4096 × 2160 and 3840 × 2160) at up to 60 frames per second (fps). XAVC offers support for lots of various content productions including intra frame record and long group of pictures (GOP) recording. On April 7, 2013, "XAVC S", the expansion of XAVC was introduced by Sony into the consumer market. Using MP4 wrapping format, XAVC-S can support resolutions up to 3840 × 2160. It's believed that the joint-effort of XAVC and XAVC-S will help Sony achieve its goal of accelerating the fast growth of 4K content in professional and consumer markets.

Software that Supports XAVC/XAVC-S File

As far as we are concerned, there’s not much software capable of supporting this unique XAVC/XAVC-S file format, which include: Adobe Creative Suite 6, Avid, Final Cut Pro X, Grass Valley, Quantel, Rovi MainConcept SDK, and Sony Vegas Pro 12. We can infer that the XAVC/XAVC-S hasn't got good popularity yet, although it's said to be one of the most popular format in the coming future.
